During an energy-efficient lighting installation at Welsh Water premises, Energys Group engineers underwent two surprise health and safety inspections, which deemed Energys’s safe working practices to be exemplary.
Welsh Water contracted Energys Services Ltd to upgrade around 10,000 of its fluorescent lamps to energy-efficient T5 equivalents using Save It Easy over a period of 5 months. The project involved installing the Save It Easy converters at 43 sites, including Welsh Water’s Dinas offices and its Cardiff East treatment plant.
A retrofit lighting converter, Save It Easy allows T5 energy-efficient fluorescent lamps to be slotted into the existing light fittings. The new-style lamps, in combination with the more efficient control gear in the Save It Easy units, typically results in energy savings of up to 65%.
While the installation was taking place, Welsh Water carried out two ‘health and safety audits’ – surprise inspections that scrutinised ESL’s safety and hygiene procedures. According to the report that Welsh Water produced as a result of the first inspection at the Dinas site, ESL passed every check with flying colours.
The Welsh Water report concludes: “[The ESL engineers are] a well organised team, with a high level of health and safety awareness. A clean and tidy working area was observed. All required documentation was produced on request.”
A second inspection of ESL was undertaken at the Cardiff East site two weeks later. On this occasion, verbal feedback was given, which described ESL’s safe-working and hygiene practices as exemplary.
Gary Mercer, Customer Services Director at Energys Group, comments: “Water and wastewater treatment environments are difficult to work in, which made the Welsh Water installation a challenge. At treatment plants, sometimes our engineers have to work in challenging conditions such as on high walkways while they are carrying out the installation.”
He adds: “For this reason, I am particularly delighted that the team, led by Alex Sansom, received such excellent feedback on their health and safety procedures. It’s truly a testament to the hard-working and dedicated people of Energys.”
